Calls for Gillian Gibbons' execution - contrast with calm British Muslims

After this week, I am a bit of a fan of Inayat Bunglawala (above), spokesman for the British Muslim Council. I first heard him speak about the teddy bear row on BBC Radio Manchester (his organisation are based there). He was absolutely unequivocal in condemning the prosecution of Gillian Gibbons:

There was clearly no intention on the part of the teacher to deliberately insult the Islamic faith, British Muslims are embarrassed by the actions of Sudan.

I see that there have been demonstrations in Khartoum, calling for Gillian Gibbons to be executed by firing squad.

Oh dear. But what a gulf between those sentiments expressed by some Muslims in Khartoum and the immensely sensible Mr Bunglawala!

Good for him, people need to get a sense of proportion.

this is incredible.what a non-sence.To go to " prayer." and then to come out demanding to have a woman killed. What about the childrens parents.Surely they should be held accountable as they have obviously not taught their children much respect to their prophet.I am finding this rather difficult to understand.Perhaps a muslim would be kind enough to clarify.
I myself have heard people being disrespectful to Jesus Christ which I take offence at,but to call for them to be shot in front of a firing squad, hey come on.

Like you I'm pleased that the Muslim Council of Britain condemned the Sudanese government's actions. I did wonder, though, what they would have thought if the insult was deliberate. Would forty lashes be an appropriate punishment for deliberately insulting the Prophet?

BTW, have you seen the Dawkins bear? :-)
