Coming soon - new LibDem main party website

I've had a "sneaky-peeky" of the party's new website, which is currently being finalised (but not quite yet available for general viewing). I have to say that I am unnaturally excited by it. The look and feel of it is much more interactive and much more "with it". It looks a little more like a blog than the current site and is generally much more whizzy and accessible.

I particularly like the buttons on the front page which allow you to click: "I am a citizen/ journalist/supporter".

There's a great drop down menu at the top - it just says "issues" - you click on it and have a whole series of options for policy areas -e.g "better government". You then get a little window which opens up within the home page (i.e. without flying off into the nether regions of a policy document) which gives you a quick summary of our mission in that area, together with a few options for that policy area - such as "key spokesperson"/"policy"/"campaigns" etc.

There's a little tag cloud - like a blog - which I like, it's a nice touch.

There is also a pretty comprehensive index down the bottom of the home page. There's also a great tool where you put in your post code and get lots of info about the LibDems in your area.

All in all, the new site will bring a very welcome fresh touch to the LibDems online. The old site doesn't really invite you to re-visit over and again. This one does. It is much more "sticky" (I think the expression is!).

Well done team!

Yeah, I'm sure the three people who see it will love it. ;)

Yes, how ever many people see the site, it is very important that the party presents a go-ahead image and has a user-friendly website which can be used to find information quickly.

It feels like an modernisation of the 2004 site - which is a good thing!

I've always disliked our current site - which I always felt took us backwards. This new one takes us forwards again.

We can argue about whether it takes us forwards enough... but at least we're finally moving in the right direction.

Given how keen you are on RSS Martin, I take it you've forgotten how cutting-edge the current site was in its time on things such as using RSS feeds at a time when no other major political sites were :-)

But glad you think this one is a step forward!

Mark,

It's not about - and never has been about - being cutting edge for the sake of it. It's about the use of new technology to maximum political effect.

If the basic site is weak and fails to deliver, RSS is irrelevant - because who's going to sign up for RSS on a site that isn't compelling?

But let's not worry about the old site. I'm just pleased to see it go.
